Christmas, aside from being the date that Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, is also marked by another grimacing phenomenon as well: it is also the time that most of hear from people that we have not spoken to all year.
This is irritating for some, awkward for most, and sometimes downright aggravating for the rest of us. However, this year, I would like us to look at this scenario through the eyes compassion and put ourselves in the shoes of those that are reaching out to us, if we are not, ourselves, the ones that are reaching out to someone else.
Problem:
- More than likely, the person who knows that there is unresolved conflict between the two of you, is fully aware that the matter isn't resolved. This "Happy Holidays" greeting, may be their way of reaching out. This is not a bad thing.
Solution:
- Our job is to make that person as comfortable as possible. If they arrive at an apology, gracefully accept it and ask how they've been. Don't explode and tell them how what they did made you feel. They know this already, probably to a much lesser degree than you do, but nevertheless, this is why they are apologizing.
- If no apology is brought up, then keep the conversation light and brief. We are not obligated to allow someone to occupy the previous space that they held in our lives, prior to the offense. We are, however, obigated to show them kindness, if our goal is conduct ourselves as mature adults who have moved on.
- Of course, if you are the offender and you have read Dr.Wick Daddy's blog for any length of time, you already know what you need to do and the manner in which it should be done.
When we release others from the prison created from previous mistakes that they have made, God uses that same key to unlock the things that we need from Him.
The bad news is: the keys used for both locks, are one in the same. Hence, when we keep others imprisoned with unforgiveness, God's unique and wonderful blessings for us, are locked away from our grasp, as well.
When we use our energy to give light to others, this enables us to shine brighter and attract good things and people that will equip us on our journey into 2012. It is going to be our best year ever.
Merry Christmas party people.
Dr.W.D.
